A Note From Ms. Northrop:

Here at Laguna, the music room is filled with energy and opportunity.  As a district, Flowing Wells is dedicated to providing a quality music education to all students, and it is our goal at Laguna to uphold this ideal.  Music is often considered to be a “special” subject, I fully agree that music is special; it is a class unlike any other.  Author Ray Bradbury once said, “We are cups, constantly and quietly being filled.  The trick is knowing how to tip ourselves over and let the beautiful stuff out.” As teachers, I believe our goal is to help students find their voice and be able to express themselves, to help them figure out how to let out the beauty and creativity in their mind.  I will do everything in my power to help your child succeed.

I am so excited to be a Laguna Longhorn, and I look forward to seeing the progress the students will make this year!

General Music

In Kindergarten through 4th grade the students are enrolled in the general music class.  This class offers students a wide variety of creative activities.  We perform, we create, and we listen.  Whether we are singing, dancing, or playing instruments the students are always actively engaged in class.

The general music classes use many different instruments; including both pitched and non-pitched percussion instruments.  The 4th grade general music classes spend a good portion of the year playing recorder and refining their music reading abilities.

The 6th grade general music class is very fortunate to participate in the University of Arizona Up-Beat hand-drumming program.  Once a week our guest teacher,   Dr. Cross, comes to work with the students on hand drumming techniques and overall music notation reading.

 GENERAL MUSIC

Band and Orchestra

We as Laguna Longhorns take a lot of pride in our music program.  We are very lucky to be able to offer both band and orchestra classes to our 5th and 6th grade students.  Band instruments include: flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, baritone, and percussion.  Orchestra instruments include: violin, viola, and cello.   All 5th grade students select a band or orchestra instrument and are taught the fundamentals of playing during their specials time.

The 6th grade band and orchestra work on harder musical concepts, as well as, more advanced repertoire.  Both the band and orchestra have many performance opportunities throughout the school year.

Longhorn Choir

After school we have choir rehearsal in the music room from 2:15 – 3:00pm on Mondays.  During this time, students work on advanced vocal techniques.  This group is very busy with performances; such as the Choral Festival, Fall Festival, and many other events throughout the school year. This group is open to all 4th-6th graders who like to sing!
